Teen wins Prudential Spirit of Community Award

CONYERS, Ga. -- A 13-year-old Rockdale County boy is one of two Georgia students to win the 2012 Prudential Spirit of Community Award.

Rashad Holmes was honored for his big heart and his community service. He made and sold cookies, then used the proceeds to pay for disadvantaged students to go on field trips and participate in local 4H and Boys and Girls Club activities.

Georgia's other winner, 18-year-old Kenneth Smalls-Muldrow of Pooler, was recognized for his work in educating young people about diabetes and raising money for a cure. Smalls-Muldrow was diagnosed with diabetes when he was only seven years old.

The two Georgia boys recently attended an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., where they received $1,000 prizes and engraved silver medallions. They also got the opportunity to meet New York Giants quarterback and 2012 Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning, who personally congratulated them on their achievement.

Conyers celebrates National Travel and Tourism Week

CONYERS, Ga. -- The Conyers Convention and Visitors Bureau is gearing up for the 29th annual National Travel and Tourism Week, which will be held May 5-13.

City officials will use the week to honor local attractions, including the Monastery of the Holy Spirit and the Georgia International Horse Park, that bring revenue to Rockdale County.

The Conyers Welcome Center will also take the opportunity to thank visitors with free refreshments and postcards from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8.

"In 2011, the Conyers Welcome Center welcomed just shy of 8,900 visitors to Conyers," tourism manager Harriet Gattis said in a statement. "We are still waiting for the final tally of 2011 numbers from the state, but 2010 figures tell us that Rockdale County realized $106 million in direct tourism spending, created and sustained over 1,200 jobs and generated $3.1 million in local tax revenue."

Randy Mills, the mayor of Conyers, agrees.

Chick-fil-A to host mother-son 'Date Knight'

Chick-fil-A to host mother-son 'Date Knight'

ATLANTA -- All of the Chick-fil-A restaurants in metro Atlanta will host a special mother-son Date Knight on Saturday, Apr. 28.

The Date Knight format will be similar to that of the franchise's massively popular Daddy-Daughter Date Nights. It will give mothers and sons a special chance to enjoy some quality time together.

The event will have a medieval theme, hence the "Knight" part of its title.

"One of Chick-fil-A's goals is to promote community connections and enrich the lives of everyone we come in contact with," Robin Lomax, Chick-fil-A area marketing director, said in a statement. "We understand the importance of mother-son relationships and want to encourage local moms to come to Chick-fil-A, enjoy their sons' company over a meal and have fun."

Powerball jackpot rises to $250 million

ATLANTA – Powerball has soared to staggering heights. Wednesday’s jackpot has jumped to $250 million after no one matched all the winning numbers in Saturday’s drawing.

One Georgia Lottery player won $10,000 in Saturday’s drawing. The lucky ticket was purchased in Pooler.

The Powerball jackpot has been growing since Dec. 28 and has rolled 12 times.

Powerball offers two payment options: the $250 million jackpot prize paid over 29 years in 30 graduated payments, or the cash option, which is approximately $156 million.

Powerball tickets are $2 per play.

As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Powerball will benefit education in the state of Georgia.

Merry Christmas from Gov. Deal

Merry Christmas from Gov. Deal

ATLANTA -- Governor Nathan Deal issued a special holiday greeting for Georgia residents on Friday.

As Christmas nears, I wanted to wish every Georgian a merry Christmas and a happy holiday season.

Christmas has a special way of reminding us what is really important: our faith in God, family and the well-being of our fellow man.

But Christmas is not limited to a single season or date on a calendar. These feelings of peace and love are always with us throughout our lives. For many, Christmas serves as a rejuvenation of these values and ideals.

After the gifts are all unwrapped and the candles begin to dim, our spirits will once again be enriched and fully restored.

As we reflect on all we have been able to accomplish this past year, we will cary this rejuvenated spirit to achieve all the goals that we have set for the coming years.
