Annual tree lighting celebration to bring joy and holiday cheer to Rockdale

CONYERS, Ga. – Rockdale County invites the public to share in the spirit of the holidays with the return of its annual Tree Lighting Celebration on Saturday, Dec.7.

Festivities begin with the Hometown Holiday parade at 4:30 p.m. and the 2013 Tree Lighting Celebration will start immediately after the parade at approximately 6:30 p.m.  

This year’s Tree Lighting theme, “Lights, Camera, Action, Christmas!” will feature performances by local choirs and dance groups, and a special appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus, who will light the County Christmas tree in front of the audience.

The Rockdale County Fraternal Order of Firefighters will be on site selling snack items such as pizza, popcorn, and hot chocolate. Proceeds will help financially-struggling families with holiday needs.

The County encourages citizens of all ages to attend this free, public event.

(WXIA) -- In honor of Veterans Day, Chili's is giving customers an easy way to support the Wounded Warrior Project.

On Sunday, Nov. 10, Chili's diners have the option of donating 10 percent of their checks to the charity, which supports injured military personnel and veterans.

Simply download the flyer from the Chili's website and present it to a server to make a donation.

Vets and military members who eat at Chili's on Veterans Day -- Monday, Nov. 11 -- will be treated to free entrées.

Public invited to join Rockdale County employees in Zumba for a cause, pie-throwing contest and walk

CONYERS, Ga. – Rockdale County invites citizens to join its fundraising efforts to support the 2013 campaign benefitting the United Way of Greater Atlanta. The campaign encourages County employees and citizens to empower families and communities through charitable giving. The Pie-Throwing Contest and Give Back Auction originally scheduled for Tues., Oct. 15 will be held on Wed., Oct. 16.

Rockdale’s fundraising efforts will also help local organizations such as Rockdale Emergency Relief Fund and Prevent Child Abuse Rockdale improve the quality of life of citizens. The public is encouraged to support the following events that will be held at the Parker Road Annex, 1400 Parker Road, Conyers, 30094.

Rockdale County employees get fit for health and charity

CONYERS, Ga. -- Rockdale County employees laced up their walking shoes on Sept. 12 to participate in the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk & Fitness Program at Turner Field.

The event is designed to promote health, wellness and fitness among companies across metropolitan Atlanta and their employees. More than 16,000 walkers and runners of all fitness levels, representing more than 400 local companies and organizations, participated in the event. A portion of the proceeds benefitted the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Back on My Feet and the Atlanta Braves Foundation.  

Rockdale County government was among the local organizations that took part in the workplace-organized fitness program with more than 30 employees who walked in support of the County’s employee wellness initiative.

ATLANTA -- 11Alive has named its six 2013 Kids Who Care winners.

The outstanding Atlanta-area teens were recently honored with $1,100 scholarships and certificates of excellence. A TV special dedicated to their many accomplishments will air on 11Alive Saturday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m.

CONYERS, Ga. -- The second annual Hands Across Rockdale community service event will take place this weekend.

Hands Across Rockdale encourages Conyers residents to help their neighbors in need through a variety of service projects.

The event will be held this Saturday, Apr. 13.

Rockdale thanks Public Safety members with 5K run/walk

Rockdale thanks Public Safety members with 5K run/walk

CONYERS, Ga. -- Rockdale County Above and Beyond Heroes 5K run/walk is debuting on March 30 to honor the county's public safety workers and their efforts to keep the community safe. 

Other proceeds from the race will go to local charities, including the Rockdale Firefighters Charity Fund, the Vicki Greenwell Memorial Scholarship, Shop with a Cop, and the Rockdale County Task Force Against Family Violence. 

According to a press release about the event, registration must be completed by March 18, and may be done so at Johnson Park on Ebenezer Road. 

All ages are invited to complete the 5K, which begins at the Rockdale County Government Annex Building.
