Woman arrested for leaving child in daycare van | Crime
CONYERS, Ga. -- A Conyers daycare worker is charged with felony child cruelty after leaving a 6-year-old boy unattended in a van.
Catherine Brown, 51, of Covington turned herself in to the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office. She was charged with felony second-degree cruelty to children, felony deprivation of a minor and misdemeanor reckless conduct.
Police said that on Sept. 9, Brown picked up the boy at school to drive him to Eye on Your Child Learning Center on Irwin Bridge Road. The child fell asleep in the back of the van during the drive.
When Brown arrived at the daycare center, she didn't get the boy out of the van, according to police. The child was left unattended in the vehicle for 20 to 40 minutes until his mother arrived to pick him up.
Antineska Ford said she went to pick her son up early that day. "I just thank God that he's here, everything's okay and he's alright," she told 11Alive News. "I'm just happy about that."
She said her son Nyzir slept through the whole thing. Nyzir said he felt sweaty when his mother woke him up. "I was sleeping the whole time," he said.
Ford said she works at the daycare center and knows Catherine Brown. She said she holds no animosity against her. "I hate that she's got to go through what she's going through because I know she's not that type of person," she said. "She didn't mean no harm and she wasn't trying to harm him in no way. She just made a mistake."
"She did it on an accident," young Nyzir said. "Not on purpose, only an accident."
David Kenney, owner of Eye on Your Child Learning Center told 11Alive News Brown was fired from her job. He said the daycare is conducting their own investigation into the incident and would have no further comment until it was completed.
