Man robs adult novelty store

CONYERS, Ga. -- Investigators are looking for the man accused of robbing a Rockdale County adult store last week.

The suspect hit Starship Enterprises on Highway 138 in Conyers at around 11 a.m. Friday.

Rockdale County Sheriff's Inv. Michael Camp said the unidentified man robbed the store at gunpoint, then shot at a customer, but ended up hitting the glass front door instead. No one was hurt.

Witnesses described the suspect as a black man of average or below average height. He was wearing gloves, a mask, dark jeans, a blue hooded sweatshirt and black shoes, and was armed with a silver handgun.

Shoplifting suspect sought in Conyers

CONYERS, Ga. -- Police are looking for a shoplifting suspect who caused multiple traffic accidents in Conyers Wednesday afternoon.

The man ran from police after trying to shoplifting at a T.J.Maxx. He caused a chain reaction crash and wrecked his car before escaping on foot in the area of Old Covington Road and Buchanan Circle, according to Conyers Police.

His name has not been released.

CONYERS, Ga. -- The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that left one man in jail and another with life-threatening injuries.

The shooting happened at around 7 p.m. Sunday at a house on Fieldstone View Lane SE in Conyers.

Rockdale County Sheriff's Inv. Michael Camp said 19-year-old Rashad Thompson is accused of shooting 25-year-old Sandino Aikens of Covington at least four times.

After shooting Aikens, Thompson ran to his home on nearby Country Trace, where he was arrested about half an hour later, Camp said.

Aikens is in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital. Thompson is being held in the Rockdale County Jail on an aggravated assault charge; more charges are possible, according to Camp.

CONYERS, Ga. -- Conyers police are looking for the man accused of robbing a gas station this week.

The suspect robbed the Chevron on Sigman Road at gunpoint at around 10:15 p.m. Monday.

City spokeswoman Jennifer Edwards described the suspect as a black man wearing a mask, gloves and knit cap. He was armed with a black semi-automatic handgun.

Teen purse snatching suspects arrested

CONYERS, Ga. -- Three teenagers were arrested this week after a quick-thinking purse snatching victim and her husband led police to them.

The victim told police that she was leaving JoAnn Fabrics in the Salem Gate shopping center at around 3 p.m. Wednesday when a 13 year old tried to take her purse.

The woman's husband, who was sitting in their car nearby, sounded the horn to distract the suspect and his two accomplices, ages 15 and 16, according to City of Conyers spokeswoman Jennifer Edwards.

The victim and her husband called 911 while the suspects ran to a nearby subdivision.

Bribery trial set for April in federal court

OXFORD, Miss. -- The federal trial of a Georgia businesswoman indicted on charges of paying bribes to a former superintendent of schools in Greenville, Miss., is scheduled for April 15 in Oxford, Miss.

Edna Goble, of Conyers, Ga., faces 10 counts of providing things of value to former superintendent Harvey Franklin Sr. in exchange for a consulting contract with the Greenville Public School District. She was indicted in December. She has pleaded not guilty.

Goble is founder and president of Teach Them to Read Inc., a reading-intervention company that was paid $1.4 million by the Greenville district, according to court documents.

Franklin pleaded guilty last August to accepting $47,000 in bribes from Goble. He has not been sentenced.

Drugs, gun, cash seized during arrest

CONYERS, Ga. -- A Conyers man was arrested on several charges during a traffic stop Wednesday.

Christopher Reece Brown was pulled over for driving without insurance. When officers searched his car, they found a stolen gun, more than $5,000 in cash and a pound of marijuana, according to City of Conyers spokeswoman Jennifer Edwards.

Brown, 27, was charged with drug possession, firearm possession, theft by receiving and no insurance. He is being held without bond in the Rockdale County Jail.
