CASCADE: Parents charged in malnourished infant's death

ATLANTA -- Two Southwest Atlanta residents were arrested Thursday in the death of their five-month-old child.

Tina Hanna, 25, and Lefty Hodge, 42, have been charged with murder and cruelty to children. They are being held in the Fulton County Jail.

The couple's infant was found unresponsive by Grady EMS in an apartment on M. L. King Jr. Drive on Sept. 3, according to Atlanta Police spokeswoman Kim Jones.

The child was later pronounced dead at Hughes Spalding Hospital. Police have not said whether the baby was a boy or a girl.

After the infant's death, DFACS took custody of two other small children living in the same apartment, Jones said. Hanna was also arrested that day on an outstanding warrant from Conyers Police; she was later released.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner has determined the child died from dehydration and severe malnutrition.

COVINGTON, Ga. -- Four young men have been charged in the Sept. 3 death of a Covington resident.

Police were dispatched to 5187 West Street in Covington around 11:50 p.m. Saturday, where they found 59-year-old Fred Layne Beeler on the couch in the living room. Beeler had been struck in the head multiple times, police said.

The victim was flown to a hospital in Atlanta, where he was pronounced dead around 4:30 a.m.

Charges filed in fatal stabbing of Conyers man

BELLEVILLE, Ill. -- Authorities in southwestern Illinois have filed first-degree murder charges against two people in the death of a Georgia man who was found stabbed to death.

The charges against 32-year-old Billie Jo Carson of East St. Louis and 26-year-old Dylon Baldwin of Caseyville were announced Friday. A judge ordered both held on $1 million bail.

Officials say Melvin Gregory of Conyers, Ga. suffered multiple stab wounds to his neck. Horseback riders found his body along a levee near Cahokia, Ill. on Tuesday.

Authorities also say a woman who cleaned up the crime scene and disposed of evidence is charged with concealment of a homicidal death and obstructing justice in the case.

There is no word about a motive for the killing.

Feds crack down on prescription drug trafficking

ATLANTA -- A federal grand jury in Atlanta has charged a total of 13 defendants from two states with illegally trafficking in oxycodone and other prescription drugs.

The two cases arise out of intensified efforts to address Georgia's growing problem with prescription drug abuse.

"Prescription drug abuse is our nation's fastest-growing segment of illegal drug use, causing significantly more overdose deaths than cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin combined," said United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates.

In the first incident, 11 Georgia residents were charged with conspiring to forge oxycodone prescriptions and sell the illegally obtained tablets.

CONYERS – Recently, the Conyers Police Department began investigating a possible child abuse case that was reported by Rockdale Medical Center Emergency Room medical staff.

A three year old child victim was brought to the ER, at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, unconscious with head injuries by her mother, Yaneth DeLaCruz Alvarez and her mother’s boyfriend, Raul Solis. Doctors discovered that the child had suffered brain hemorrhages, which no clear explanation for the injury.

Conyers Historical Society to host Olde Town Jail Tour

CONYERS – This weekend, the Conyers Historical Society will hold their “Olde Town Jail Tour” from 10:00 a.m. until 2 p.m. This tour, which is held on the first Saturday of the month, is an exhibit of what the jail looked like in the late 1800’s. The jail doubles as a museum, which displays different Conyers artifacts.

The tour includes starts downstairs I the sheriff’s house and ends upstairs in the prisoner’s dormitory. The museum is home to many artifacts from Conyers and Milstead: like the first electric stove or the first TV/radio in Conyers.

The jail is located on Milstead Avenue.

Naked Burglar Found in Middle School Ceiling

COVINGTON — Early Saturday, Covington Police searched Cousins Middle School for more than two hours looking for a burglar who set off the school’s security system. After the search they located Ronald Stephens, 21, of Conyers, naked in the ceiling.

According to a Covington Police Department incident report, officers, the department’s K-9 Unit, deputies from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office and even firefighters with the Covington Fire Department were dispatched to help locate the perpetrator.

According to officials, the reason Stephens was wearing no clothes was because the vent where he entered the building was extremely small.

Stephens was arrested, on the scene, and charged with criminal trespass, burglary and a probation violation warrant out of Rockdale County.
