BEST SPOTS: Dog Parks
BEST SPOTS: Dog Parks

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- For this week's edition of Best Spots, we have compiled a list of dog parks for you to take you furry friend for some fun.

Recently, dog parks have been sprouting up in the Atlanta area. With newly modified leash law restrictions, owners who may or may not have yards need a place for their dogs to run free and get adequate daily exercise.

Some say, these parks are becoming more popular as the country begins placing more of an emphasis on health following the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” initiative.

Dog owners in the City of Decatur can take their furry children to the Oakhurst Dog Park an off-leash, permit only park. The park is approximately 2 acres and is partly wooded with a “grassy plain” area. Oakhurst is completely fenced. Regular park goers complain that one low-lying area in the park gets muddy after it rains but aside from that, the park is a neighborhood favorite. The park is located at 414 East Lake Drive in Decatur.

Mason Mill Park in Decatur is one of the newer dog parks in the area. The dog park area, in the park, has an about ½ acre public dog park with water fountains for dogs. The park is located at 1400 McConnell Drive.

Popular Stone Mountain Park has two dog park sections, one for large dogs and another for small dogs. The park is one block from the Main Street shopping area. Visitors like to run their dogs in the open area of the largest lot. There is a manually operated water pipe for dogs, nearby. The park is located at on Fourth Street in Stone Mountain.

Be sure to take photos of you and your dog at the park, this weekend, and send them to photos@11alive.com. Next week, the “Where U Live” team will compile a list of BEST SPOTS for Neighborhood Thrift Stores.
