Electronics recycling and paper shredding event in Rockdale County

CONYERS, Ga. – Keep Conyers-Rockdale Beautiful (KCRB) celebrates its Recycling Month in September with an Electronics Recycling and Paper Shredding event, Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the parking lot of the Rockdale County Government Annex, 1400 Parker Road, Conyers.

The free, half-day event will provide the public a place to safely discard and recycle old documents and electronics, regardless of working condition. There is a maximum of four banker boxes per vehicle for paper shredding.

Professional electronics recycling and paper shredding companies will securely handle all items on site under the close supervision of government staff. People will simply need to drive up to drop off items that volunteers will unload.

Navy SEALs bringing legendary obstacle course race to Atlanta

CONYERS, Ga. -- Leaders of BattleFrog, the obstacle course race group founded by former U.S. Navy SEALs, have announced that due to the tremendous amounts of requests they have received they are bringing their legendary obstacle course race series back to metro Atlanta. The May race will be one of the first stops on the 2015 tour that will see the organization award more than $1 million in cash and prizes to competitors.

BattleFrog Atlanta will be held on Saturday, May 16 at Georgia International Horse Park (1996 Centennial Olympic Parkway, Conyers). Last year’s event drew participants from Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Activities begin at 7:30 a.m. and will feature heats for all participants and age levels, as well as an entire family-friendly experience that includes interacting with Navy SEALs, enjoying multiple attractions within the festival compound, and watching racers tackle BattleFrog’s obstacles.

Volunteers encouraged to sign up for 2015 Great American Cleanup

CONYERS, Ga. -- Keep Conyers-Rockdale Beautiful (KCRB) announces the return of the Great American Cleanup (GAC) on Saturday, Apr. 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Pine Log Park Pavilion, 1500 Ga. Highway 138, Conyers.

The half-day event, which KCRB hosts in partnership with the City of Conyers and Rockdale County government, encourages citizens to pick up garbage, tires and other debris around the community, and teaches youth about the importance of litter prevention and recycling as much of the materials collected as possible.

KCRB invites civic and neighborhood groups, businesses, Boy and Girl Scout troops, churches, youth groups, individuals, and families to participate in GAC. Volunteers are encouraged to send a representative from their group to the park’s pavilion to check in and pick up supplies beginning at 9 a.m. on the day of the cleanup.

Chairman and CEO Richard Oden to deliver 2015 State of the County address

CONYERS, Ga. – Rockdale County Chairman and CEO Richard Oden will present to citizens, businesses and other community stakeholders a review of 2014 and his vision for 2015 at the county’s first-ever State of the County Breakfast that the Council for Quality Growth and Conyers-Rockdale Chamber of Commerce will host.

Chairman Oden will address business stakeholders on Thursday, Mar. 5 at 8 a.m., in the Springfield Baptist Church atrium, 1877 Iris Drive, Conyers.

Then, he will address the community at large during a free event on Thursday, Mar. 12 at 6 p.m., at the J.P. Carr Services Community Room, 981 Taylor Street, Conyers.

The 2014 Charles P. Cole Citizen Involvement Award will be presented to a citizen at this time who Chairman Oden selects because of their dedication of time and energy to the Rockdale community.

Chick-fil-A to host Daddy-Daughter Date Night

(WXIA) -- Chick-fil-A will bring back its popular Daddy-Daughter Date Night this weekend.

The fifth annual event will be Saturday, Feb. 7 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at participating restaurants.

Daddy-Daughter Date Night encourages fathers and their little girls to spend time together. Every "couple" will receive take-home booklets featuring conversation starters and ideas for future outings.

Attendees will also be treated to tableside service, limousine and trolley rides, and other surprises.

Daddy-Daughter Date Night is free, except for the cost of food. Seating is available every hour; fathers and daughters are encouraged to call their local Chick-fil-A locations in advance to reserve a time.

Public invited to Rockdale Coalition of Homeowners & Civic Associations meeting

ROCKDALE, Ga. -- The Rockdale County Board of Commissioners invites citizens to attend the upcoming meeting of the Rockdale Coalition of Homeowners and Civic Associations (RCHCA) on Thursday, Feb. 12 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the J.P. Carr Services Community Room, 981 Taylor Street, Conyers.

The meeting will bring together the leaders of local homeowner associations and civic groups, as well as interested citizens, from across Rockdale to share news and information and learn about county projects and initiatives.

Agenda items for this meeting include a presentation about special use permits, department announcements, ways to give your feedback about transportation-related issues and how to sign up for CodeRED, the county’s emergency notification service.

Tree Lighting Celebration to bring holiday merriment to Rockdale

CONYERS, Ga. -- Rockdale County invites the public to escape the winter weather and share in the warm spirit of the holidays at its annual Tree Lighting Celebration on Saturday, Dec. 6 in the Rockdale County Auditorium, 903 Main Street, Conyers.

Festivities begin with the Hometown Holiday parade at 4:30 p.m. and the Tree Lighting Celebration starting immediately after the parade between 6 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

The county encourages citizens of all ages to attend this free, public event.

This year’s theme, “Christmas in Paradise,” will feature performances by local dance groups, elementary, middle, and high school choirs and a special appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus, who will light a large, beautifully-decorated Christmas tree on stage in front of the audience that Cowan Ace Hardware donated. There will still be lights on the large outdoor tree for citizens to enjoy through the holiday season.
