CONYERS, Ga. The Rockdale County Parks & Recreation Division is hosting free public events in June to celebrate new recreational features and facility improvements to its trails and at the Earl O’Neal Sports Complex.

On Saturday, June 14 from 8 a.m. to noon, the county encourages residents visit the various trailheads. For instance, visitors can start the trail at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit and ride their bikes the entire way, or take a leisurely walk along the path, Jackie Lunsford, Director of the County’s Recreation and Maintenance department, said.

“Right now we want everyone to save the date and make plans to come out and join us for what I’m sure will be a fun, relaxing day,” Lunsford said.

No registration is necessary.

Monastery of the Holy Spirit, 2625 Highway 212 SW, Conyers, 30094

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony: 8 a.m.

Be among the first people in Rockdale to see this new trail section. Rockdale Chairman & CEO Richard Oden will bring welcome remarks.

Try the Trail Organized Bike Ride: Immediately following the ribbon cutting

Join County officials and Rockdale residents on a leisurely bike ride that the Arabia Mountain Heritage Alliance is sponsoring and enjoy the lush scenery of one of Rockdale’s newest trail sections.

 

Lorraine Trailhead, 3465 GA Highway 138, Conyers, 30013

Scavenger Hunt/Vendor Tables and more: 8 a.m. – noon

Visit the information tables of Rockdale County Recreation & Maintenance and Animal Control to learn more about County parks, recreation centers and animal adoptions. There will be something for citizens of all ages to enjoy, including giveaways, fire truck displays and snacks for sale from the Senior Site Council.

Mini-Zumba Class: 9 a.m.

The public is invited to participate in a fun workout with upbeat world rhythms while enjoying the beauty of Lorraine Trailhead.

 

South Rockdale Community Park Trail Head, 3909 E. Fairview Road, Stockbridge, 30281

Scavenger Hunt/Vendor Tables and more: 8 a.m. – noon

Join us for a variety of activities for all ages, including arts and crafts, games for children, informational booths featuring Pratt Industries and County departments, and a special visit from Sparky the Fire Dog and Pluggie the Fire Hydrant. A Rockdale County Fire-Rescue truck will also be on display.

 

DeCastro Trailhead, intersection of Union Church and Daniels Bridge Road, Stockbridge, 30281

Scavenger Hunt/Vendor Tables and more: 8 a.m. – noon

Learn more about the County Extension services, the top 10 trees on the trail, insects, and gardening. Take advantage of informational booths and enjoy a scavenger hunt.

Take advantage of informational booths and giveaways, and enjoy a scavenger hunt at the final trail section on the tour.

 

MONDAY, JUNE 16 - EARL O’ NEAL SPORTS COMPLEX RIBBON CUTTING

A few days later on Mon., June 16 at 5 p.m., park officials will celebrate a new pavilion and playground opening on the north side of the Earl O’ Neal Sports Complex, 2709 Old Covington Road, Conyers, with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

“We are truly proud of the work that’s been done to develop this pavilion and playground, so we’re putting a lot of energy and focus into making it a special celebration for the whole community,” Lunsford said.

After the ribbon cutting ceremony, visitors can tour the park’s football fields to see firsthand the SPLOST-funded improvements that include new bleachers, curbing, and football field and building improvements. Also directly after the ceremony, the Recreation Commission and the SPLOST Recreation Subcommittee will each separately hold their regular meetings in the pavilion.

Finally, one other highly-anticipated project Parks & Recreation is conducting is building a wonderful new enclosed pavilion at Black Shoals Park. A celebration for that project is planned for October 2014.
