IHOP offering free pancakes for charitable donations

(WXIA) -- IHOP will once again participate in the National Pancake Day promotion on Tuesday, Mar. 4.

Customers who visit any IHOP location on National Pancake Day will be treated to a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes. In exchange, the restaurant chain encourages diners to leave a donation for a number of charities, namely the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

Beginning this Saturday, Feb. 1, IHOP will collect donations for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Customers can buy paper balloons that cost either $1 or $5. The balloons will hang in IHOP restaurants through National Pancake Day.

Anyone who purchases a $5 balloon will receive a $5 IHOP coupon to use on a future visit.

Free Play Days at Rockdale County Tennis Center

CONYERS, Ga. – Rockdale County is offering Free Play Days at the Rockdale County Tennis Center to county residents and employees.

The Free Play Days for 2014 will be offered on:

  • Friday, March 7, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.
  • Friday, June 6, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.
  • Friday, Sept. 5, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.
  • Friday, Dec. 12, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Residents and employees are encouraged to visit and play with family and friends or take lessons, which are free and offered at specific times during these special days.

Racquets and balls will be available to rent at no cost as well.

Free refreshments will also be offered during lessons.

Chairman and CEO Richard Oden to deliver 2014 State of the County Address

CONYERS, Ga. – Rockdale County Chairman and CEO Richard A. Oden will deliver the State of the County Address to citizens, employees and community leaders on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Rockdale County Auditorium, 903 Main Street..

The public is welcome to attend this free event.

With the theme, “Continuing to Move Forward by Uniting, Building and Energizing,” Chairman Oden will review successes County departments, staff and leaders achieved this year on the community’s behalf, as well as share his plans and goals for Rockdale in 2014.

Much of what he will cover also will be outlined in an illustrative booklet he traditionally provides the audience as part of the event to reference throughout the year.

Additionally, the winner of the illustrious Charles P. Cole Citizen Involvement Award will be announced at the event.

Several local elected officials and dignitaries are expected to attend the Chairman’s address.

CONYERS, Ga. -- Rockdale County Chairman Richard Oden has teamed up with Andy Peabody, Executive Director at Rockdale Emergency Relief, Senior Pastor Eric W. Lee and Minister Brian Russell of Springfield Baptist Church, and other civic and community organizations to host the third annual Walk By Faith event.

The 1.1 mile-walk will start on Sat., Jan. 4 at the Salem Gate Plaza parking lot in Conyers near Highway 138 and Old Salem Road and will conclude at Springfield Baptist Church, 1877 Iris Drive. The staging will take place at 9 a.m.

The group is asking participants to bring 5 or more dry or canned good items so that the community can fill the local food pantry shelves.

The Ray Davis Middle School marching band will play music while leading the walk to Springfield.

“This is a great first event of the year for the community to come together on one accord with positive, powerful energy” Chairman Oden said.

Annual Tree Lighting Celebration location moved due to inclement weather

CONYERS, Ga. – Rockdale County invites the public to stay out of the rain and share in the spirit of the holidays at its annual Tree Lighting Celebration on Sat., Dec.7 now at an indoor location.

Due to the anticipation of inclement weather Dec. 7, the 2013 Tree Lighting Celebration will move into the Rockdale County Auditorium, 903 Main Street, Conyers. The program will still start immediately after the Hometown Holiday parade between 6 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.  

This year’s Tree Lighting theme, “Lights, Camera, Action, Christmas!,” will feature performances by local choirs and dance groups, and a special appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus, who will light a beautifully decorated Christmas tree on stage in front of the audience. There will still be lights on the large outdoor tree for citizens to enjoy through the holiday season.

CONYERS, Ga. – Rockdale County invites the public to share in the spirit of the holidays with the return of its annual Tree Lighting Celebration on Saturday, Dec.7.

Festivities begin with the Hometown Holiday parade at 4:30 p.m. and the 2013 Tree Lighting Celebration will start immediately after the parade at approximately 6:30 p.m.  

This year’s Tree Lighting theme, “Lights, Camera, Action, Christmas!” will feature performances by local choirs and dance groups, and a special appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus, who will light the County Christmas tree in front of the audience.

The Rockdale County Fraternal Order of Firefighters will be on site selling snack items such as pizza, popcorn, and hot chocolate. Proceeds will help financially-struggling families with holiday needs.

The County encourages citizens of all ages to attend this free, public event.

Public invited to attend BOC Holiday Open House

CONYERS, Ga. – The Rockdale County Board of Commissioners invites citizens to its Holiday Open House on Tuesday, Dec. 17 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Board of Commissioners Office, 962 Milstead Avenue, Conyers. 

The informal, drop-in event will provide the public with an opportunity to meet elected officials, County leaders and staff.

At the open house, the public can enjoy festive holiday music and delicious refreshments and beverages.

Also, the Rockdale County Master Garderners’ Extension Volunteers will adorn the BOC Office with beautiful holiday decorations for the event.
