Learning center to hold open house

CONYERS, Ga. -- Rockdale County's Literacy Link Learning Center will hold a free open house event for prospective students.

The open house will be Saturday, Mar. 23 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Families of infants, toddlers, pre-K and after school students are invited to come to the event for food, games and information about the center's literacy programs.

Chick-fil-A Daddy-Daughter Date Night returns in 2013

ATLANTA -- Chick-fil-A's wildly popular Daddy-Daughter Date Night will return in February.

More than 100 Atlanta- and Athens-area Chick-fil-A restaurants will host the event on Saturday, Feb. 2 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Every couple in attendance will receive an activity sheet with conversation topics and a booklet called "Continuing the Conversation," which gives the dads and daughters suggestions for getting to know each other better.

"One of Chick-fil-A's goals is to promote community connections and enrich the lives of everyone we serve," Chick-fil-A area marketing director Robin Lomax said in a statement. "We understand the importance of father-daughter relationships and want to encourage dads to take a break from busy schedules, enjoy their daughters' company over a meal and have fun."

AKA holding peace rally for middle school students

ATLANTA -- Members of metro Atlanta's chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will hold a peace rally and workshop for middle school students over the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday weekend.

The event will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Ivy Community Center in southwest Atlanta. It is part of the 40 Days of Peace project, which aims to spread service and kindness through the country.

The peace rally and workshop will aim to teach young people about Dr. King's mission, and to raise awareness of crime and crime prevention strategies. Law enforcement members will also give an interactive presentation to encourage children to stamp out gangs and bullying.

Middle school students from several metro Atlanta counties -- Cobb, Cherokee, Clayton, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, Paulding and Rockdale -- are expected to participate.

CONYERS, Ga. -- A brand new Burger King is about to open in Rockdale County.

Members of the Conyers-Rockdale Chamber of Commerce will cut a ribbon at the new restaurant at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9.

The Burger King is located at 2230 Salem Road.

Pancake breakfast to raise money for Family Promise

CONYERS, Ga. -- The Conyers-Rockdale Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta to raise money for a worthwhile local cause.

A special pancake breakfast on Thursday, Dec. 20 will support Family Promise of New Rock, a community organization that works to eliminate homelessness.

The breakfast will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Chili's on Dogwood Drive in Conyers.

Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for children ages 10 and younger.

Atlanta Boy Choir to perform at monastery

CONYERS, Ga. -- The Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers will once again host the Atlanta Boy Choir for a Christmas concert this December.

The world famous choir, under the direction of Maestro Fletcher Wolfe, and its small chamber orchestra will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15 at the monastery's Abbey Church.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at trappist.net. The show always sells out in advance.

Be the Change 5K to benefit pregnancy center

CONYERS, Ga. -- Run a 5K this weekend to benefit a good cause in Rockdale County.

The Be the Change 5K raises money for the Refuge Pregnancy Center in Conyers.

The fun begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 at the Olde Town Conyers Welcome Center on Railroad Street.

Registration is $25 through Dec. 4 and $30 after. Finishers will receive a T-shirt and plenty of refreshments at the finish line.
