S.P.A.R.C. event encourages healthy lifestyles

CONYERS, Ga. – Sickness Prevention Achieved Through Regional Collaboration (S.P.A.R.C.) returns to Rockdale County on Thursday, May 29, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Olivia Haydel Senior Center, 1240 Dogwood Drive, Conyers.

The event empowers adult citizens to participate in a variety of free heath checks and screenings, including blood pressure and glucose checks, and diabetes, mammogram, and mental health screenings. Several service agencies, including the American Cancer Society, Atlanta Regional Commission, Conyers Family Chiropractic Center, Georgia Cares, Georgia Medical Care Foundation, Mercy Heart, Oakhurst Medical Center, Reagan Home Care Pharmacy, Rockdale County government, Rockdale Medical Center, and View Point Heath will be onsite to assist with senior citizen issues and provide participants with essential health-related information and resources.

Referrals are available and all services are free for adults.

IHOP offering free pancakes for charitable donations

(WXIA) -- IHOP will once again participate in the National Pancake Day promotion on Tuesday, Mar. 4.

Customers who visit any IHOP location on National Pancake Day will be treated to a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes. In exchange, the restaurant chain encourages diners to leave a donation for a number of charities, namely the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

Beginning this Saturday, Feb. 1, IHOP will collect donations for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Customers can buy paper balloons that cost either $1 or $5. The balloons will hang in IHOP restaurants through National Pancake Day.

Anyone who purchases a $5 balloon will receive a $5 IHOP coupon to use on a future visit.

Rockdale County hosts Rock Solid Community Walk/Run to benefit the United Way

CONYERS, Ga. -- Rockdale County invites citizens to lace up their running shoes and participate in the Rock Solid Community Walk, Saturday, Nov. 2 at 8 a.m., at 1400 Parker Road in Conyers. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m.

The 4.2-mile walk/run, which benefits the United Way of Greater Atlanta and service organizations across Rockdale, will begin and end at the Parker Road Annex. The event, sponsored by Coventry HealthCare, is open to participants ages 12 and up. Pre-registration is required.  

Registration forms and liability waivers are available online at www.rockdalecounty.org. Registration is available by mail: Get Active Walk Coordinator, Rockdale County Human Resources, P.O. Box 289, Conyers, GA, or onsite at Rockdale County Human Resources Department, 981 Milstead Ave., Conyers, 30012. Registration is $10, and optional, pre-paid T-shirts are available for $6.

Rockdale County employees get fit for health and charity

CONYERS, Ga. -- Rockdale County employees laced up their walking shoes on Sept. 12 to participate in the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk & Fitness Program at Turner Field.

The event is designed to promote health, wellness and fitness among companies across metropolitan Atlanta and their employees. More than 16,000 walkers and runners of all fitness levels, representing more than 400 local companies and organizations, participated in the event. A portion of the proceeds benefitted the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Back on My Feet and the Atlanta Braves Foundation.  

Rockdale County government was among the local organizations that took part in the workplace-organized fitness program with more than 30 employees who walked in support of the County’s employee wellness initiative.

CONYERS, Ga. -- One Rockdale County school has been named to Georgia's 2013 SHAPE Honor Roll.

The SHAPE (Student Health and Physical Education) program was created last year to recognize schools that work hard to combat childhood obesity. It challenges students and teachers to make lifestyle improvements in three key areas: nutrition, wellness and physical activity.

Schools can be honored at three levels: gold, silver and bronze.
