CONYERS | 2 inmates escape from jail

CONYERS, Ga. -- Police in Rockdale County are searching for two inmates who walked away from a work detail over the weekend.

On Saturday, 18-year-old Jose Alfredo Mendez and 24-year-old Cesar Villegas escaped from the wooded area behind the Rockdale County Jail where they were working, according to Rockdale County Sheriff's spokesman Michael Camp.

Both inmates' prison jumpsuits were found in the woods. Officers and K9 units from Rockdale and Newton counties searched for the duo; Camp said the K9s lost their scent on Lake Rockaway Road, leading police to believe that someone picked up Mendez and Villegas in a car.

Both inmates were in jail for driving on suspended licenses; Mendez was also imprisoned on charges of burglary and not wearing a seat belt.

Camp said both inmates are considered non-violent. They now face additional charges related to the escape.

Anyone who sees Mendez or Villegas is asked to call the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office at 770-278-8000.
