Student in custody after shot fired at Conyers MS

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. -- A student was detained after a shot was fired at Conyers Middle School in Rockdale County on Tuesday, according to the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office.

The 14-year-old suspect, who is in 8th grade, was charged with minor in possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon on school property, reckless conduct, and making false statements. He was taken to the Rockdale County Youth Detention Center.

There were no injuries reported and the weapon was recovered after the single shot was fired in a restroom, officials said.


The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office said a protective sweep was completed and no other weapons were found. The school remained on lockdown for most of the afternoon.

Anxious parents expressed anger, frustration and concern after the incident.

Rockdale Sheriff Eric Levett promised that the incident will be investigated.

"We will go back and look at their protocol, our protocol to see if there's anything we can do better," Levett said.

In the meantime, Rockdale County Public Schools students will not be allowed to backpacks to their classes for the rest of the school year.
