Drunk hit and run driver caught by witnesses | News
CONYERS, Ga. -- A hit and run driver was caught thanks to a paramedic from another region who happened upon the crash. It turned out he had three DUI charges. This story came to us as a news tip from the victim's family, that was really more of a request to say thank you.
"Everything is hurting now," explained Mangau Gaur of Conyers.
A hit and run driver sent her car spinning on Rock Chapel Road in Dekalb County on a drive back from the mall with friends. That is just about all she knows about the wreck.
"My eyes were open, but I don't remember what's going on," she said.
The car drove off before she could see anything. But – as luck would have it – two parametics from Henry County happened to see the crash. They followed the car and helped police identify Howard Thomkins. He was charged with hit and run and DUI. It was his third DUI charge.
"This isn't her first time being in a motorcycle accident that has to do with a drunk driver," explained her son Peru Gaur.
He says she was hit before and had just recently started riding in cars again.
"That gets to me. Nobody has the right to do that to anybody, to give them that kind of emotional trauma," he said.
However with the trauma comes a sense of gratitude for the men who helped.
"I was just thankful. I was thankful that somebody actually stopped by," he said. "I don't know what it is that I can offer them the two sides my love my kind words my sincerity and thankfulness."
