Over the course of your life, the chances of being the victim of a crime are at least one in three, higher if you live in a large city, and higher still if you’re a woman. The criminal’s objective is to maximize gain and minimize risk, and he’ll usually pick the easiest target with the most to offer. Given these odds, it pays to take precautions by following some basic safety rules:

Commissioner Oz Nesbitt to host Youth Round Table for the young men of Rockdale

CONYERS, Ga. –The young men of Rockdale County are invited to the male youth round table, “The Man Event,” that Rockdale County Board Commissioner Oz Nesbitt, Sr. is hosting to discuss issues related to young men and the transformation from boyhood to manhood.

The gathering will be on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the large meeting room at the Johnson Park Recreation Center, 1781 Ebenezer Road, in Conyers.

This is a free event and young men of all ages and background are encouraged to attend.

No RSVP or preregistration is required.

Doris Patterson named Rockdale County 2013 Employee of the Year

CONYERS, Ga. – The Rockdale County Board of Commissioners announced Tuesday the selection of Doris Patterson as the County’s Employee of the Year for 2013. Patterson was surprised with news of the award at the BOC’s work session, which was met with great applause and support from her family and colleagues.

Patterson is the Deputy Director of the County’s Department of Human Resources. She was selected out of four finalists as the individual who best exemplified exceptional customer service, outstanding initiative and operational effectiveness during the 2013 calendar year.

Rockdale County Water Resources Director Dwight Hicks nominated Patterson for the award. He wrote in his submission:

CONYERS, Ga. –- Throughout the month of April, Rockdale County encourages citizens to sign up for CodeRED, the county’s high-speed notification system that delivers time-sensitive messages via voice, email, and text to targeted areas or the entire County during emergency situations or disasters. The awareness campaign coincides with the theme for National County Government Month (NCGM), Ready and Resilient Counties: Prepare. Respond. Thrive.

“Severe weather and emergency situations can hit Rockdale at any time,” Rockdale Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director Dan Morgan said. “In observance of the NCGM theme, now is a fitting time for anyone who lives or works in Rockdale County to sign up for CodeRED weather alerts and emergency notifications.”

Gov. Deal names leader to Office of Child Advocate

ATLANTA -- Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has appointed an attorney as director of the state Office of the Child Advocate.

Ashley Willcott will begin her new job on Feb. 1.

Willcott has worked as a lawyer in various juvenile courts since 1992. In addition to running her own private practice, she is a Special Assistant Attorney General representing the Department of Family and Children Services in Dawson and Rockdale counties. Willcott has also worked as Juvenile Court Judge Pro Tem in DeKalb and Fulton counties.

She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and English from Newcomb College at Tulane University and a law degree from Emory University.

The Office of the Child Advocate "will work proactively and steadily to improve the way our state helps families in need," according to its website.

Local seniors honored during annual Volunteer Breakfast

CONYERS, Ga. – Several local residents were celebrated during the Olivia Haydel Senior Center’s Volunteer Breakfast on Dec. 31. The annual, festive event recognizes center members who contribute positively to the center and community and marks the end of the year to all volunteers with a special thank you.

County Chairman & CEO Richard Oden sponsored the three awards to the following winners:

•     2013 Senior Meals on Wheels Volunteer of the Year – Pauline and LeRoy Hudson, married 45 years, moved to Georgia from New York. They serve as Center Site Council representatives and have volunteered with Meals on Wheels since January 2007. Last year, they made 54+ deliveries to home-bound seniors.
