Citizens encouraged to apply for Board of Elections vacancy

CONYERS, Ga. The Rockdale County Board of Elections and Registration is looking for a new at-large board member who will also serve as its board chair.

The board is comprised of three members with two partisan members from each political party who then appoint a third at-large member. The newly-selected at-large board member will serve a two-year term ending June 30, 2017.

Board member responsibilities include the oversight of County elections, discussion of and decisions pertaining to election policies and ongoing communication with the public. Board members are not involved in the day-to-day operations of the Elections Office or in administrative decisions. Georgia Election Code 21-2-70 provides for the powers and duties of the Board of Elections and Registration.

Gov. Deal names leader to Office of Child Advocate

ATLANTA -- Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has appointed an attorney as director of the state Office of the Child Advocate.

Ashley Willcott will begin her new job on Feb. 1.

Willcott has worked as a lawyer in various juvenile courts since 1992. In addition to running her own private practice, she is a Special Assistant Attorney General representing the Department of Family and Children Services in Dawson and Rockdale counties. Willcott has also worked as Juvenile Court Judge Pro Tem in DeKalb and Fulton counties.

She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and English from Newcomb College at Tulane University and a law degree from Emory University.

The Office of the Child Advocate "will work proactively and steadily to improve the way our state helps families in need," according to its website.

CONYERS, Ga. – Rockdale County Chairman and CEO Richard A. Oden will deliver the State of the County Address to citizens, employees and community leaders on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Rockdale County Auditorium, 903 Main Street..

The public is welcome to attend this free event.

With the theme, “Continuing to Move Forward by Uniting, Building and Energizing,” Chairman Oden will review successes County departments, staff and leaders achieved this year on the community’s behalf, as well as share his plans and goals for Rockdale in 2014.

Much of what he will cover also will be outlined in an illustrative booklet he traditionally provides the audience as part of the event to reference throughout the year.

Additionally, the winner of the illustrious Charles P. Cole Citizen Involvement Award will be announced at the event.

Several local elected officials and dignitaries are expected to attend the Chairman’s address.

Public invited to attend BOC Holiday Open House

CONYERS, Ga. – The Rockdale County Board of Commissioners invites citizens to its Holiday Open House on Tuesday, Dec. 17 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Board of Commissioners Office, 962 Milstead Avenue, Conyers. 

The informal, drop-in event will provide the public with an opportunity to meet elected officials, County leaders and staff.

At the open house, the public can enjoy festive holiday music and delicious refreshments and beverages.

Also, the Rockdale County Master Garderners’ Extension Volunteers will adorn the BOC Office with beautiful holiday decorations for the event.

CONYERS, Ga. – Rockdale County Tax Commissioner RJ Hadley will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for renovations to the lobby of the Tax Commissioner’s Office on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 8:30 a.m. at 969 Pine Street in Conyers. The renovations allow for more space for residents and improved workspaces for staff.

Georgia Civic Awareness Program brings government closer to Rockdale students

Georgia Civic Awareness Program brings government closer to Rockdale students

CONYERS, Ga. – Beginning this month, local high school students will experience government beyond the classroom through the Georgia Civic Awareness Program for Students (GCAPS) in Rockdale County.

This year, Rockdale County Cooperative Extension selected eight local high school students to participate in leadership training and team building exercises, tour County facilities, and interact with local and state public officials. The program gives high school students direct access to local government by educating them about the responsibilities of local government and the essential services it provides to citizens. The following high school students were chosen to participate in GCAPS:
