ATLANTA -- Every year, more than 90 percent of American teachers spend hundreds of dollars of their own money on classroom supplies, according to the National Education Association.

Now, with the first day of school less than a week away for some, Metro Atlanta Staples stores are offering local teachers a big helping hand.

Saturday, July 30 is Teacher Appreciation Day at Staples. The first 100 teachers to visit certain Atlanta-area stores from 9 a.m.

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Charter Schools Association has created a "charter school of the year" award with help from the Coca-Cola Foundation.

The first winner of the award will be announced at the association's annual meeting in October in Macon. The award carries a $50,000 prize.

Schools in the 18-county Metro Atlanta area can qualify. They must have been open five years and have demonstrated academic success and sound fiscal practices.

Free and cheap school supplies

Free and cheap school supplies

ATLANTA -- This is the best time of year to buy both school supplies and office supplies.  Some things are as low as a penny, or even free after rebates!

I set out to find the best deals on a typical kindergarten or first grade supply list from Atlanta Public Schools.

I found the most convenient way to buy supplies is to order them through SchoolPak.com. The company will ship a box of required supplies to your home or school. The first grade list came to $55.34 including shipping.

I set out to see if I could find better deals in the stores. First our summer intern Katie and I went through the weekly sale flyers in search of the lowest possible prices for every item on our list.

ATLANTA -- Parents and teachers know that having the right school supplies can mean the difference between a passing or a failing grade for students.

That's why Publix has teamed up with the United Way and several local partners to host the School Tools for Cool Kids program.

Residents can stop by their neighborhood Publix grocery stores from Monday, July 18 until Sunday, Aug. 14 to purchase and/or drop off school supplies in the School Tools bins.

"We encourage customers to donate school supplies to help . . . children begin the school year on a level playing field," said Brenda Reid, media and community relations manager for Publix.

All of the grants were given during the spring 2011 grants cycle. They are among more than 480 schools and parent organizations that were given money for parent-initiated school improvement projects benefiting public education across the country.

"Through Lowe's Toolbox for Education grant program, we are acknowledging parent-initiated efforts that enhance the lives of children in the communities we serve," said Marshall Croom, chairman of Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation.
