Ga. Senate OKs scholarship tax credit changes

Ga. Senate OKs scholarship tax credit changes

ATLANTA --The Georgia Senate has approved changes to a tax credit program that provides scholarships for children to attend private schools.

State senators voted unanimously Thursday to support the changes, which include a reporting requirement on the average household income of recipients and requires eligible students to have attended public school for at least six weeks with a few exceptions.

Under the system, people can receive state tax credits by giving nonprofit scholarship providers donations of up to $1,000 for individuals and up to $2,500 for married couples.

The Southern Education Foundation had raised concerns that donors may have been allowed to earmark donations, although supporters had argued that was prohibited under the law. The Senate bill would add language specifically prohibiting that.

ATLANTA -- Two metro Atlanta high school seniors are among 101 students nationwide to win the 2012-13 Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement.

The honor is given annually to the nation's top achievers in AP classes in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Each Siemens Awards winner -- one boy and one girl from every state -- receives a $2,000 college scholarship.

Georgia's winners are Tejas Khorana, who attends Wheeler High School in Marietta, and Heeyoon Kim, a student at Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology in Conyers.

Khorana has taken 11 AP classes so far in his high school career; AP Biology was his favorite. He is a straight-A student who plans to study computer science in college. He also enjoys swimming, tennis and tutoring his peers.

When asked to give advice to other AP students, Khorana said, "Be prepared for the rigor involved (and) learn good study habits."
