CONYERS, Ga. – The Rockdale County Department of Recreation & Maintenance – Parks and Recreation Division is excited to announce nine young members of the Rockdale Striders track and field team will hit the pavement this weekend to participate in at least 15 combined events at the 2014 Georgia Parks and Recreation Association Class A Hershey State Track Meet. The two-day event is May 9-10 at Westside High School Stadium in Augusta, Georgia.

Led by United States Track and Field Association certified track and field coach BJ Kennedy, the young athletes will participate in track and field categories such as the 1600-meter run, the high jump, long jump and softball throw.

The qualifying athletes recently placed in the top 3 in their respective events at the Georgia Parks and Recreation District 6 Class A meet in Henry County:

 

Reece Burton: Age 13

First place in the long jump

Second place in the 1600 and 800-meter run.

 

De’Marshae Travis: Age 13

First place in the 100 and 200-meter run

Second place in the softball throw.

 

Patrick Murray: Age 13

First place in the high jump

Third place in the 1600-meter run

 

Quincy Smith: Age 11

Third place in the long jump

 

Corinne Williams: Age 13

Second place in the softball throw

 

Aliyah Williams: Age 12

First place in the long jump

 

Olivia Pillay: Age 11

Third place in the long jump

 

Younger Burton: Age 9

Second place in the softball throw

 

Cynia Hines: Age 9

Second place in the long jump

 

Gates open Fri., May 9 at 4 p.m. and Sat., May 10 at 7:30 a.m. Admission is $2 for adults and free for children ages 6 and under.
