Kevin Ware cuts down championship net

Kevin Ware cuts down championship net

ATLANTA -- Monday was a huge night for the University of Louisville.

The team defeated the University of Michigan 82-76 to win this year's NCAA Championship.

Rick Pitino became the first coach in history to lead two different schools to the title. He gave a lot of credit to one athlete who didn't play a minute in Atlanta -- Rockdale County's Kevin Ware.

The injured guard, who suffered a compound fracture in his leg during the Midwest Regional final against Duke, was on the bench for both of Louisville's Final Four wins.

And he was on the court at the end for the traditional ritual of cutting down the nets.

UPDATE:  -- Louisville guard Kevin Ware is recovering following successful surgery on his broken right leg.

School officials say the sophomore had the bone reset and a rod inserted into his right tibia. The surgery took two hours. Ware is expected to stay in Indianapolis until at least Tuesday.

INDIANAPOLIS -- School officials say that Louisville guard Kevin Ware has been taken to a local hospital after sustaining a broken lower right leg during the first half of Sunday's Midwest Regional final against Duke.

The injury occurred with 6:33 left in the first half as Duke's Tyler Thornton made a 3-pointer. Ware tried to contest the shot and his leg buckled when he landed, bending almost at a right angle.

Louisville spokesman Kenny Klein said hospital officials told the school that Ware was "resting comfortably" and that the pain is "under control."
