1st Lt. Dimitri A. del Castillo, 24, of Tampa, Florida died June 25, 2011, at Kunar province, Afghanistan of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
He was on the radio calling in support when he was hit. He kept working on the support until he died with the handset in his hand.
Lt. del Castillo graduated from the United States Military Academy in 2009, earned his Airborne patch at the academy and Ranger School in May 2011. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Parachutist Badge, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Medal and the NATO Medal.
Lt. del Castillo is survived by his wife, 1st Lt. Katie Pulliam del Castillo, who is also a USMA Class of 2009 graduate, and was serving with him in Afghanistan when he was KIA; his parents, Catherine and Carlos del Castillo; his brother, Carlos Andres del Castillo; and his sister Anna del Castillo.
